The TFCC welcomes a panel of environmental experts for a briefing on Fri., Nov. 28, 14:30-16:30, on Taiwan's environmental crisis.

From Taiwan's greenhouse gas emissions levels (some of the highest in the world) to its critically endangered distinct humpback dolphin population, the island's ecological problems are formidable. In China, the
functional extinction of its Baiji river dolphin, has underscored the severity of that country's environmental decline.

For Taiwan, the extinction of its humpback dolphin would point to a crisis of similar proportions. The death last month of petrochemicals tycoon Wang Yung-ching makes this an even more pressing issue, as eulogies abound praising the Formosa Plastics co-founder for his rags-to-riches life story.

But our panelists will discuss his darker environmental legacies, and how Formosa Plastics, dwindling humpback dolphins, soaring CO2 levels, and the overall decline in the quality of Taiwan\'s air and water, indeed the world\'s, are related. Also on the agenda are the
environmental policies of President Ma Ying-jeou and ecological concerns surrounding plans to develop a gaming industry on Penghu.

The TFCC welcomes Christina MacFarquhar, an environmental expert at the Wild at Heart Legal Defense in Taiwan; Pan Han-sheng, secretary-general of the Green Party, a political party advocating environmental protection; and Lee Gen-cheng, former commissioner of the Environmental Impact Assessment Commission under the EPA .
