Greens globally to join the Greens’ climate campaign
2008 / 11 / 29

The next global climate conference (COP 14) will be held in Poznan, Poland from 1—12 December 2008. This will be an important step in the negotiations to reach a global agreement to replace the Kyoto Protocol. The new agreement is due to be finalised in December 2009 at COP 15 in Copenhagen, Denmark. COP 15 will be a major focus for Greens globally and the Poznan meeting is an opportunity to start organising and highlighting our campaign.
At Sao Paolo we agreed on a Global Greens Declaration, Climate Change – Time for Transformation. It calls on the international community to negotiate in good faith to ensure that a binding and equitable regime for global greenhouse gas reductions, that is consistent with avoiding dangerous climate change, is agreed at COP 15 at Copenhagen in 2009 (see full text at http://plan21.globalgreens.org/node/106; english only at this stage; translations will be arranged).
We urge Greens globally to join the Greens’ climate campaign by
1. Undertaking actions to highlight the importance of the COP 14 at Poznan, either as
specific Green events or as part of the global day of climate action on 6 December.
2. Planning a series of actions in the lead-up to COP 15 at Copenhagen, with the aim of
maximising global community pressure for the world’s government’s to reach an
effective binding agreement to avoid dangerous climate change.
If you are going to Poznan --
Elizabeth May, Leader of the Canadian Greens, Green Members of the European
Parliament, the Green Ministers of Environment of Ireland and Czech Republic and Green parliamentarians from several European countries will be attending COP 14 at Poznan. We plan to organise an informal meeting as well as an official media event on behalf of the Global Greens. Green representatives who will be in Poznan should send their details to the press officer of the EGP, Graham Burgess (
